These paintings are reflective of the atmosphere that enveloped those who chose the 'dictates of conscience"over the the decrees of government in New Zealand during the 1930's and 40's.
The title of the exhibition is taken from the words of Michael Joseph Savage...'cranks and ingrates, the dreamers of fantastic dreams, of ideological oddities and the ne'er do wells; a diversity of creatures having at least this in common, the urge to propagate error'... referring to the extreme left of his own party and encompassing those who vigorously opposed military conscription.
