Exhibition Text

‘There are objects that do without a name’ - Rene Magritte

These works continue my ongoing interests in the nature of ‘being’. Presently everything seems to point to this state being as much about transition and change as it is about particular absolute. By fabricating simple objects from a thin planar material (plywood) then painting them, I hope to find some interesting conjunctions between object and surface or image that provoke our ideas about place and time.

Those in groups have grown together while the individual pieces are able to exist on their own. They have no titles (with one exception) because nothing occurred to me during their making and I have begun to like them nameless. I referred to them in my notebook by little hieroglyphs. Their titles are signs that stand for them, but are nonetheless mute.

“Images, text and objects are all porous sieves through which we filter our thinking, our experience and our memory”
