Johnny Turner imbues his work with awareness of time, history, geology and memory. Tension between contrasting raw and sensual smooth surfaces heightens the expressive dramatic qualities and establishes a confluence of style and spiritual concern. Turner’s respect for the materiality and intrinsic language of stone establishes works which are both monumental and remarkably beautiful.
I was taught how to listen to the sound of a stone. It’s a magic feeling…when I find it, I have to stay with it and give it the love and care it deserves…this “stardust”, millions of years old. (1)
The simple dramatic boat form of Celestial Vessel (2007) implies notions of journeying and navigation through history and time. Grainy-banded strata within the Takaka marble suggest movement through powerful sweeping oceanic currents; a nobly poised bow commands.
Altissimo (2006) reaches for the sky, signifying the presence of spiritual concerns paying homage to enlightenment. The fine pinnacle of balance portrays an acute sense of fragility in contrast to the volume, density and character of the stone.
