Material Motives showcases five contemporary New Zealand artists influenced, motivated and inspired by pattern, texture, colour, form and shape. Painters Peata Larkin, Reuben Paterson and Lorraine Rastorfer, photographer Richard Orjis and leading ceramist John Parker present new and recent works adding to the diversity of Dunedin’s iD Fashion week.
Lorraine Rastorfer’s large scale works shimmer, shine and ripple before the viewer. With the delicacy of silk the paint weaves and waves on the surface of her paintings. New glitter works by Reuben Paterson are all glam and glitter. Celebrating the patterns of retro material, Paterson combines sparkle and style. Taniko with acrylic; Peata Larkin’s unique and effective painting technique combines traditional Maori motifs with contemporary concepts. Richard Orjis’s large scale photographs are seductive and compelling. Vivid colours dress the darkness of the photographs’ backgrounds and figures appear through pattern and texture. Recent recipient of the Arts Foundation Arts Laureate Award, John Parker’s ceramics explore form, function and the effect of light and shadow on various shapes.
