This inspirational new body of work is a combination of landscape-derived subject matter and phantasmagorical studio based imagery infused with mystical and spiritual elements. These works are characteristic of McFarlane’s skilful handling and treatment of oil paint. He will often record a particular scene ‘plein-air’ in order to capture a particular light or shift in weather. This contrasts most effectively with the sense of permanence in his landscapes that are evocative of past generations and human occupation and use of the land.
